Edge of Discovery was originally written in 1997 as a main theme for a PBS television series about scientific discoveries of the 20th century. It was a low budget project, and couldn’t afford live strings. When Brian decided he was going to set 2025 aside and record his 1984 first symphony A Speck In Time, and his 1993 second symphony A Middle Eastern Symphony, Brian prepared a third symphony, the shorter 1997 work, Edge Of Discovery, expanding it some in the middle to a 11 minute symphonic work, in case there was time to record it along with the other two symphonies. Keane added guitar and drum parts to make it more in keeping with the other two symphonies, and some dazzling piano parts for American Ballet Theater principal pianist, Emily Wong, who he dhad done a recording of Bach with in 2024. All three symphonies were recorded and finished together in 2025.
